“I remember their braids, and I remember they were really Black. They were like Black, Black. They weren’t like country club Black. They were Black like I’m used to.”~Chris Rock

Their father really wasn’t a fan of tennis, but he saw it as an opportunity. In his eyes, tennis was an opportunity for his family to rise above the confines of Compton. While Compton teaches her members to be extraordinarily tough, creative and smart, many outside her borders will try to keep those beautiful qualities rammed within Compton’s borders. Venus and Serena’s father took tennis to challenge those boundaries and bring the world the beauty miss when they think of Compton.

From being booed in their hometown to proving they had the right stuff, the Williams Sisters were and are showing the world that thing some of us know as Black Girl Magic. From rocking beads to designing as a second career, from taking losses like their male counterparts to competing while chirping and winning in the same manner, and from enjoying being single to spending time with God to deciding on what family means the Williams Sisters show the world that Black culture can be embraced by society as a whole.

Venus and Serena is a movie about sisterhood. It shows women can actually compete without being catty. Without being a crap in the barrel, I as a woman can strive to be the best in the world and still help my fellow sisters of all nationalities and races rise. It is a representation of the best sportmanship and competitive spirit that can flow in women and girls.

Venus and Serena is a movie that shows why representation matters. It matters to all the poor children–both boys and girls–living in rural America as well as in the ‘Hood. It matters to the little Black girls who are constantly told by society to conform or fail to be good enough. It matters to every young girl who is aspiring to be more than just the traditional roles assigned to women like wife, mother, teacher, retail sales associate, nurse, etc. While there is nothing wrong with those roles, some more . . . much more. Serena and Venus helps to give hope to those who are told to stay in their lane to cross over into the faster lane of life and succeed.
