Kicked In The Gut

One would hope athletes would want to not jeopardize themselves or their career and learn from fellow athletes’ mistakes. However, when it comes to violence against women the NFL cannot keep its players from crossing the line.

Despite its efforts after the Ray Rice fiasco, the National Football League has had several more players accused of violence against women. Aldon Smith, Cayleb Jones, Rueben Foster, Vernon Butler, Chris McCain were all accused of domestic violence in 2018 plus a sexual assault accusation against Adam Gotsis.

Another act of domestic violence from last year was perpetrated by Kareem Hunt formerly of the Kansas City Chiefs. Hunt, as demonstrated in the video below, punched and kicked a woman despite several people trying to restrain him in a hotel in Ohio. Kansas City swiftly dropped him from the team. Jump to today, and a team in Ohio picked him up–Cleveland Browns. How many women will feel kicked in the gut for women in Northern Ohio?

The NFL has instituted a strict domestic violence policy with the first incident requiring a 6 game ban and a second offense requiring up to a lifetime ban. So, why would the Cleveland Browns risk their 2019 season? Or, better yet, what makes the Browns think they assist this young man in changing his behavior?

Hunt was involved in three violent incidents last year of which 2 were in Ohio. Further, the young man comes from a family that is steeped with violent tendencies from domestic violence to manslaughter. Unless, the Browns can find a way to make Hunt deal with his anger issues they are looking at another Josh Gordon situation on a much larger, violent level.
