Antonio Brown (aka AB) has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. AB couldn’t get out of Pittsburgh fast enough leaving the Steelers to enter the 2019 NFL season with the Oakland Raiders. However, that love fest did not last long after AB’s bad behavior ending with the verbal assault and threats to Oakland’s GM Mike Mayock.
Mercy was shown to AB as the New England Patriots were willing to take him on as the renowned wide receiver he is known to be. Things were looking like AB may be able to settle down as Coach Bill Bellichick is known as capable of handling difficult players. But that mercy was thrown away when AB once again showed his behind. This time AB wrote intimidating text messages to an artist who rebuffed his sexual advances during his short stint as a Patriot. Since he is already being accused of sexual assault and rape of his former trainer, the Patriots dropped AB like a hot potato.
Now, both his attorney, Darren Heitner, and his sports agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have terminated their representation with Brown. I’ve seen this pattern happen twice before with a promising NFL athlete–Lawrence Phillips and Aaron Hernandez . . . . begging the question is AB this decade’s Lawrence Phillips? Or, even Hernandez?

In 1995, the impressive football player of Lawrence Phillips, a Heisman trophy hopeful and most possibly winner, began his slow descent into the raging mania that led to his total destruction. Phillips mania fueled by jealousy led him to drag his ex-girlfriend, Kate McEwen, down three flights of stairs and bash her head into a wall. He was suspended by his coach, Tom Osborne, for 6 games.
Phillips did manage to be picked up by several NFL, European and Canadian teams but the demons continued to follow him. He developed an alcohol problem, continued a pattern of domestic violence incidents, and was finally sentenced to time in prison. While in prison, Phillips killed his cellmate before ending his own life.
Jump to earlier this decade. We all know the story of Aaron Hernadez had a promising career with the New England Patriots. It turned ugly with the murder of one of his running buddies, Odin Lloyd. During the murder trial, we learned of the darker side of Hernandez . . . the drugs, guns, his criminal past. Hernandez was serving his sentence for murdering Lloyd when he decided to end his own life in prison.

Do you see the pattern? Is this to be the fate of AB? The similarities are frightening, but is there anything anyone can do to stop it? Is AB doomed to end up like Hernandez and Phillips? Maybe, just maybe, the third time will be the charm and this time there will be a different ending to the story.
