Sexual Assault Starting To Run Rampant In Hockey

Exavier Pope is correct. If you see a problem, you either need to confront it or decide to be part of the problem by backing down. Well, sexual assault is not area where I believe one should ever back down. Backing down and pussyfooting around the subject has only increased the problem within the hockey world. That is not the direction I want one of my favorite sports to go.

Jackson Katz put the issue of sexual assault this way, “We talk about how many women were raped last year, not about how many men raped women.” In the hockey world, there is this glamorous image portrayed with grand gestures of we support this cause and that cause. And yet, here we are with 3 young men within a span of months not years charged with sexual assault.

Why? Because for all the platitudes, there is this ugly underbelly trying to hide the truth. The truth is the men in the industry are willing to coverup these incidents or give guys a “second chance” instead of fully holding these guys accountable. It is the perfect example of talking out the side of one’s neck.

Logan Mailloux, Nicholas Daigle, Massimo Siciliano ended up being rewarded with positions on the Montreal Canadien (Mailloux) and the Victoriaville Tigres (Daigle and Siciliano). What happened to their jail time? Or better yet, why weren’t they made to complete at least a year’s worth of mental health counseling to protect future women and themselves? So, do women in the visiting cities need to be worried for their safety because those young men are there? Do men have to be worried about their moms, wives, daughters, nieces, friends and aunts?

It is not just these three young men. There is the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh) scandal. Then, there is the Chicago Blackhawks scandal. That is four sexual assault scandals within 9 months in the hockey world. That is not including several prominent NHLers being accused of sexual assault within the past few years. The training initiative on sexual assault and domestic violence is not working. Maybe a policy . . . oops, there isn’t one on the issue either.

Damn a shield if it’s going to leave you morally bankrupt.
