Two of college football’s most successful coaches, Mike Gundy and Dabo Swinney, seem to believe America needs football. Perhaps, they are correct for stress relief. However, college football cannot be the need to save America when this country is facing an invisible enemy that means to kill.
Source: KWKT FOX44Mike Gundy stated last week Oklahoma need football to keep the economy going. He also stated the student-athletes were young and could easily fight off the virus. What Mike Gundy fails to realize even after his non-apology is the state of Oklahoma’s economy goes beyond Cowboys’ football. While having the 29th largest economy in the United States, Oklahoma derives its wealth from Government, Finance, Trade and Mining. If you factor college football under Education & Health, it would be ranked 7th and 10th if you place it in Entertainment.
Another factor Gundy gets wrong is COVID-19 and young, male student-athletes ability to be immune or fight off the virus. First, there is an offensive lineman at Florida State fighting this virus right now. Second, the virus has been known to sentence a few young to their death. Third, the guys playing under Gundy are human beings. They have concerns and thoughts about this situation. They are not your “chattels” as many seem to unwittingly treat student-athletes. It is about their safety and lives not the economy.
Then, we have Dabo Swinney. Swinney is a God-fearing man and he probably means no harm. But Swinney may want to visit two Scriptures–Romans 13:1-2 and James 1:5. First, flaunting his wealth by disregarding stay-at-home orders by flying on a “sanitized plane” is not following one of God’s commandments. It’s not a good look for Clemson, himself and more importantly, God. Swinney may also want to pay more attention to what the experts are saying not only in the United States but in other countries as well.
God has placed those college football players under his guidance. He is responsible for leading those players in the right direction. Just like his players are accountable to him for wrongdoings, Swinney is accountable to God. God is a merciful but He also believes in justice.

President Trump is echoing similar garbage like Gundy about the economy. Currently, Congress and some states’ Governors seem to be the only ones who understand the severity and consequences of COVID-19. Lives are stake, and student-athletes lives matter
